Tanzania is rich in precious jewels, not the least of which is the magnificent blue Tanzanite, which can be found nowhere else in the world. Another gem is the Tanzanian Ruby, a brilliant red stone with a distinctive appeal.
Mererani Tanzanite Mine The Mererani Tanzanite Mines, located in the Mererani Hills in northern Tanzania’s Manyara Region, 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of Arusha, are where the blue Tanzanite was first discovered in 1968 and are continuously mined today by both local and large mine operators.
Following an early pick-up in Arusha, you will travel approximately 60 kilometers to the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, immediately south of the Kilimanjaro international airport, and all the way to the Mererani area. This is the ideal spot where the Tanzanite mineral was discovered, and it is only found here in the entire world. This beautiful stone is discovered approximately 1000 meters underground, on a volcanic igneous rock. You will descend down the mine to learn about the mining process by exploring the machinery and spending time with the miners on-site. This is a full-day activity that departs from Arusha Town. You must bring a copy of your passport and visa for the migration process.
